Big, Soft & Chewy: Harley-Davidson Chocolate Chip Cookies

Its Christmas season, and one of the best smells these days is not coming from our Harley, but from the kitchen, its cookies time.

I am often amused by the many products branded with the bar & shield logo of Harley-Davidson, from dog collars

to ladies thongs,

But for one of my old sins, few HD branded products exist: food. So what else to do on a cold Sunday afternoon then to bake my very own

Harley-Davidson Chocolate Chip Cookies

I must admit, I am not a good cook, rarely do I have to produce my own food for survival, but once I start in the kitchen, it turns out mostly sweet.

I found a American recipe for a rich and seductive cookie, with chocolate melting into even more chocolate, and this cookie is impossible for any chocophile to resist. Well, that sound HD, it could have been written by Harley-Davidson’s marketing department spin doctors.

You easily  know the recipe is American, because its all about sticks, cups, teaspoons and ounces, so lets have a look at the ingredient list:

2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, cut into pieces.
1 cup of granulated sugar

1 stick of unsalted butter
1 large egg
1/4 cup of whole milk
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 teaspoon of baking powder

1/4 teaspoon of salt
1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips

For a european metric educated person like myself, the first big challenge is to solve the mystery of what on earth one stick of butter is. Here they are not sticks, but sold in 250 gram blocks. Thanks to Google, I learned: 2 sticks are 1 cup, which is about 227 gram of butter. So needing 1 stick you cut your block in half.

One problem is to get your head around the fact that one cup is a volume measure, and 1 cup of sugar is double the weight of 1 cup of flour. Best you have a cup measure at hand, and a teaspoon (volume) measure, and off you go shopping, what I did at Waitrose.

Now lets prepare our very own Harley-Davidson-cookies:

Melt the 2 ounces (60g) of unsweetened chocolate and stir until smooth. Set aside

In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until smooth, add egg, milk and vanilla, and blend.

Add melted chocolate and blend again.
In a seperate bowl, mix flour, baking powder and salt.

Add that to creamed mixture and stir in chocolate chips.

Scoop dough in about 18 portions

and bake at 350 degrees F (that are 175 degrees C) for about 15 minutes, until firm to the touch. Attention: they are hot.

But these are not yet Harley-Davidson chocolate chip cookies, they are very normal chocolate chip cookies.

To make them the real thing we live to ride and ride to live for, they need the bar and shield logo.

For this, cut out the logo lines from a piece of paper, place this paper on the cookie, and sprinkle some icing sugar onto it.

And now you have original Harley-Davidson chocolate chips cookies.

What else should you decorate your cookies with? Stars and little angels? Did that for the last 50 years…
